Storm The Size Of Australia Hits New Zealand

A storm the size of Australia has whipped New Zealand leaving tens of thousands of people without power and a stadium roof crashing down. Skip related content
Roofs were lifted and trees uprooted as hurricane-force winds swept across the country and lightning strikes ignited fires.
It was second natural disaster to hit the country in a fortnight.
The South Island city of Christchurch escaped the worst of the storm but continued to rocked up a series of aftershocks up to magnitude 4.5.
The storm, described by the independent weatherwatch.co.nz website as "one of the largest on the planet" stretched the emergency services.
A spokesman from the Fire Service northern communications centre said: "Most of the calls were about fallen trees across roads or property, and roofs lifting."
Nearly 100,000 people lost electricity supplies overnight Friday and by Saturday afternoon 17,000 were still waiting to be reconnected.
Winds reached hurricane force on the coast west of the main city of Auckland as gusts up to 96mph swept in from the Tasman Sea.
In the lower North Island, there were over 100 lightning strikes, sparking fires in at least one building and several trees.
Snow was the biggest threat in the South Island where police advised people to stay off the roads, describing them as "treacherous".
In the southern city of Invercargill the roof of a stadium collapsed under the weight of snow.
There have been no reported casualties.

Lucy Schollbach was born 12 weeks premature, weighing just two-and-a-half pounds.
Her parents Justin Schollbach, 42, and Leah James, 33, died instantly when their car veered off the road and hit a street lamp, Sydney's Sunday Telegraph has reported.
They were just a few minutes away from their home in the Sydney suburb of Kurnell after the hour-long trip to visit Lucy.
Mr Schollbach and Ms James made the trip twice a day to see their daughter, who spends most of her time in an incubator at Sydney's Royal Hospital For Women.
It was during one of these visits that Andrew Loxton, the father of Ms James' nine-year-old son Stephen, filmed the couple cuddling Lucy.
Mr Loxton said Ms James was a loving and devoted mother.
"Leah was always smiling like a Cheshire cat, so happy to be visiting her little baby girl," he told the Sunday Telegraph.
"I'd just like to see that smile again."
Mr Schollbach's father, Rob, said: "Having Lucy changed Justin.
"It's the happiest I have seen him in his whole life and now this has happened."
Doctors say Lucy is expected to stay in hospital until November.
She is in the care of Sydney social services until it is decided who will raise her.
Her parents' funerals will be held next week

Top 10 foods that can help you lose weight

Losing weight is not just about reducing food intake and cutting things out of your diet, there are a few additions that you can make to your daily diet that can indeed help you lose weight. We've found 10 foods stuffs that incorporated with a healthy eating approach can help you shift those extra pounds and speed up weight loss.

Grapefruit
We've all heard of the grapefruit diet but you don't have to live on a diet of grapefruit alone to lose weight. It's been found that that eating half a grapefruit before each meal or drinking a serving of the juice three times a day can help you drop the pounds. The magic ingredient is the fruit's phytochemicals and their effect of reducing insulin levels which stimulates your body to convert calories into energy rather than storing as flabby fat.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a super spice when it comes to boosting your wellbeing as it has many health-giving properties. In terms of weight loss, it's all to do with controlling those post-meal insulin spikes, which is what make you feel hungry. And you don't need to get much of the stuff to get the benefits; studies have shown just a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon a day can lower the blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. To up your cinnamon intake either sprinkle it on to your breakfast cereal, or maybe mix it into your morning latte.

Chili peppers
Adding a bit of heat to your diet can give you a weight-loss boost. Studies show that having a spicy start to your morning, i.e. eating chilies as a part of your breakfast can make you opt for a smaller lunch. Apparently it's down to capsaicin which is found in chilies and red peppers that has appetite suppressing properties. Granted - chilies aren't the easiest of items to face as your morning meal but how about as a part of a spicy egg-white omelette or stirred into scrambled eggs for a spicy weight loss kick.

Fennel tea
Again fennel tea is a food stuff that boasts a list of health giving benefits; it's packed with good levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium as well as the vitamins B and C. But when it comes to the weight-loss stakes fennel had a double benefit: working both as an appetite suppressant and a metabolism booster which really are both useful if you're trying to lose weight. Fennel tea is widely available in supermarkets so add it to your daily diet to stave off cravings and boost your fuel burn.

Salad
Eating a low-calorie salad before your main meals can help you to lose weight and ensure you get recommended daily intake of veggies. And it's not rocket science as to how it works for weight loss, the key is the sheer volume of a salad, which makes you feel too full to pig out when it comes to your main meal. You need to make sure you don't drown it in a fatty dressing though - a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar makes the perfect healthy accompaniment to a fresh salad.
Green tea
Another powerful brew - green tea really has a multitude of health and wellbeing benefits. And if you are a keen into fitness it makes the perfect pre-workout drink; it's been found to increase endurance by as much as 24%, allowing you to exercise longer and burn more calories. But in terms boosting your weight loss power, a study carried out by the Journal of Nutrition, drinking five cups of green tea per day can help you lose twice as much weight, most of it where we want to lose it most - around the middle.

Celery
Celery rates well as a weight-loss food as you can actually end up burning more calories eating it than your body will take on consuming it. But by no means does that make celery low in nutritional value; it's super-packed with fibre (great for digestion) and foliate (the essential nutrient for the care and production of new cells within the body). Get your celery fix by making sure it's featured in your pre-meal salad, as an accompaniment to your lunch or as a healthy snack when you want to satisfy that 'munch' craving.

Lentils
Lentils are great weight-loss food as they have the power to really satisfy your hunger without packing your body with loads of calories and fat - that's often why lentils feature heavily as a meat substitute - they can make you feel like you've had a meaty dish minus the calories and saturated fat that come with eating meat. Again like celery, lentils are full of fibre and foliate so as well as giving you the full feeling, they are great for digestion and healthy cell growth.

Dark chocolate
Granted chocolate is not low in calories nor in fat, but dark chocolate has two major dietary positives that can lead to long term weight loss. First, it's quite difficult to scoff massive quantities of high-quality dark chocolate as compared to the milk stuff. Secondly, dark chocolate is very high in health-promoting antioxidants. In terms of a weapon in your weight-loss armoury  you can use dark chocolate as a way to curb any sweet cravings, just a few small squares to quell a full on chocolate pig out is well worth the modest calorie intake.

Quinoa
Pronounced 'Keen-wah' quinoa is known as the 'mother grain' by the ancient Peruvians. Quinoa is good for weight loss as it has the power to keep you feeling fuller for longer due to its high protein content. Also the carbs that are present in the grain are released slowly into the body so you won't get that rush of energy after eating quinoa as you would with other foods like white rice or pasta.  You can eat quinoa raw but we reckon it's best when it's cooked in a similar way to rice or couscous

Brian favourite to win Ultimate BB

Brian Dowling is the bookies' favourite to take the Ultimate Big Brother crown as Channel 4 waves goodbye to the long-running reality show.
The former air steward, who entered the house in 2001 as an unknown, is expected to beat off competition from other former contestants to be named the viewers' favourite.

The final will also mark the end of Big Brother's 10 years with Channel 4 which announced last summer it would not be renewing its deal with programme-maker Endemol.

The reality show may not end, however, as media tycoon Richard Desmond said he was thinking of reviving it when he took over the Five TV network in July.

Bookies Paddy Power and William Hill both made Brian the favourite to win, with odds of 2/9.

Chantelle, who won Celebrity Big Brother in 2006 despite being the only housemate who was not actually famous, is second favourite to win. The model, who had to pretend to be a singer with fictional pop band Kandy Floss to fool her fellow contestants, married Ordinary Boys singer Preston after the pair met on the show.

They split within 10 months and later divorced but viewers hoped for a reconciliation after both returned to the house this summer.

Paddy Power offered odds of 7/2 on Chantelle winning the final while Preston is trailing on 33/1.

Third favourite is tantrum queen Nikki, who first entered the house in 2006 dressed as a Playboy bunny. William Hill has Nikki on 10/1 while Paddy Power rates her chances as slightly better on 8/1.

Also in the running for the crown are "Nasty" Nick, Ulrika and Victor. Vanessa, Coolio, John McCririck, Nadia, Makosi, Josie and Michelle have already left the house

Five shows not to miss 11 /12 September

Albert’s Memorial (Sun, ITV1, 9pm) – our top pick

Sir David Jason is in his element as taxi driver Harry who – along with Frank (David Warner) – agrees to fulfil dying pal Albert’s last wish: to bury him in Germany. Over half a century ago, the three men had been best friends in the British Army invasion of Berlin but none had been able to leave the memories and scars of war behind. Drama mixes with comedy as the pair kidnap Albert’s body from the hospital mortuary, strap it to the roof-rack of Harry’s taxi and begin a journey both literal and into their own memories and unexpressed feelings. Bittersweet and, as you would imagine, winningly played by Sir David.

David Jason: Battle Of Britain (Sun, ITV1, 10pm) is a documentary featuring interviews, many of them fascinating, with survivors.

Strictly Come Dancing (Sat, BBC1, 6.25pm)

This is not the start of series eight proper, but rather a ‘Red Carpet Launch Show’, whatever that is when it’s at home. Basically a chance to size up this year’s contestants, and meet three new male pro dancers. So who are the hopefuls? Well, one name absolutely leaps out (in a ball gown the size of a barrage balloon, landing with a thump): Ann Widdecombe, surely looking at the John Sergeant role. The only surprise about Gavin Henson and Goldie is that they haven’t been in it previously, while Paul Daniels and Pamela Stephenson do their bit for the oldies and Kara Tointon and Tina O’Brien add the soap. Bruce, etc, all return.

Merlin (Sat, BBC1, 7.25pm)

This is, to all intents and purposes, a children’s show in terms of style, dialogue and plotting – but we have it on very good authority that the powers-that-be are trying to take it tween. Following the monstrously successful ‘Twilight’ formula, expect more teen-type angst – and more cute-but-unthreatening boys with their tops off – this season. In this first episode, Morgana is sought and eventually found, but she is not a happy witch, spelling trouble for Arthur and Merlin. The meddling of Morgana’s evil sister Morgause (Emilia Fox) also means trouble is in store for Uther.

71 Degrees North (Sat, ITV1, 9pm)

Yes! It’s a new reality show – with rugby star Gavin Henson as one of the contestants. Jeez, doesn’t he have some non-reality TV stuff to do? Anyway, this here finds ten celebrities – and, as ever, we use the word under advisement – competing in a series of challenges in the Arctic Circle. It is, indeed, like ‘I’m A Celeb… On Ice’, and very enjoyable it is too, seeing the likes of Shane Richie, Joe Absolom and Diarmuid Gavin shiver and suffer as they fool around in fjords, herd reindeer and generally work for their (frozen) crust.

9/11 Things – some of which are our wildcard choices

Eagle-eyed schedulers have certainly spotted Saturday’s date and, while we’re obviously not recommending the following if you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps, there is some excellent programming around the anniversary. ‘9/11 State Of Emergency’ (Sat, C4, 9pm) is a definitive minute-by-minute drama-doc about the events and ‘9/11 After The Towers Fell’ (Sat, Discovery, 8pm) a heartbreaking account of the search for survivors. But the most astonishing programme is ‘The 9/11 Faker’ (Sun, C4, 7pm) about Tania Head, who falsely claimed to be a Twin Towers survivor and became the poster girl for the victim network. It was all baloney. ‘9/11: I Was There’ (Sun, Nat Geo, 9pm) is a simple and moving series of testimonies from people who were.

ALSO

Idiots making music: ‘The X Factor’ (Sat, ITV1, 7.45pm). Idiots waving flags and listening to music: ‘Last Night Of The Proms‘(Sat, BBC2, 7.30pm and BBC1, 9.10pm). How about ‘The Vera Lynn Story’ (Sun, BBC2, 8pm)? Gosh there’s a lot of war / nostalgia stuff this weekend, isn’t there? Talking of which: it’s the last-ever ‘Heartbeat’ (Sun, ITV1, 8pm).

Seven secrets billionaires know about money

Not all billionaires are big spenders

Although Russian oligarchs and Middle Eastern sheikhs splash out on such luxuries as ocean-going yachts, private jets and Premiership football clubs, not all billionaires are such big spenders. Indeed, many self-made tycoons still practise the thrifty habits which helped them (and other shareholders in their companies) to become mega-wealthy.

Here are seven lessons which we can all learn from the world’s savviest entrepreneurs:

1. You don’t need a mansion

Our national obsession with property means that most Brits dream of buying the swankiest house in town. Likewise, some billionaires buy homes around the world as often as we buy new shoes. However, you don’t need to buy a 66,000-square-foot mansion on Lake Washington, as Microsoft’s Bill Gates did.

Investment superstar Warren Buffet still lives in the five-bedroom house in Omaha, Nebraska that he bought for $31,500 in 1958 (although the ‘Oracle of Omaha’ has a $4 million holiday home in Laguna Beach, California). Similarly, Carlos Slim Helú, the world’s richest man, has lived in his current home for more than four decades.

And take a look at the Top 10 things that boost a property's value. It’s clearly not space that matters most to the buyers!

2. You don’t need to travel in style

Although lottery winners often rush off to buy one or more flash cars, many entrepreneurs and business moguls stick to low-cost travel. While Larry Ellison of Oracle is famed for his love of private planes and fast yachts (racing in the America’s Cup), other billionaires shun big boys’ toys.

For instance, Warren Buffett declines to buy posh motors; instead, he has drives an ordinary car for decades until it conks out. His explanation for avoiding extravagant purchases is, “Most toys are just a pain in the neck.” IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad drives an ancient-but-reliable Volvo and flies economy class. As he says, “Ikea people do not drive flashy cars or stay at luxury hotels.”

If you see yourself more like James Bond than an ‘Ikea person’, then bear in mind that living the lifestyle of the rich and famous can be done on a budget. Read You too can live like James Bond to find out how!

3. You don’t need a degree

This autumn has seen a record number of applicants to universities: over 673,000. Of these, as many as 150,000 students will not find a place on a suitable course in time for the new academic year.

The good news is that you don’t need further education to become loaded, as the billionaires’ list is littered with school-leavers and college dropouts. Among the dropout alumni are Bill Gates of Microsoft (ex-Harvard College), Steve Jobs of Apple (who dropped out after one term) and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (another Harvard dropout).

In fact, according to Wikipedia, the average wealth of dropout billionaires ($9.4 billion) is nearly triple that of billionaires with PhDs ($3.2 billion). So, success doesn’t require a BA, BSc or PhD. Likewise, having a degree is no guarantee to wealth; far more important are drive, self-discipline and a passion for what you do.

If you do have a formal qualification, find out which are The best and worst-paying university degrees.

4. You don’t need family money

Few of the 15 people in the above list rich inherited their wealth, with the notable exceptions of Christy Walton and Jim Walton, who inherited their fortunes on the death of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

Although some of these billionaires came from well-to-do families, most built their vast fortunes on the back of their own hard work and abilities. So, while a helping hand from family may get you off to a good start, it takes sweat and tears to build an empire. Also, in Warren’s wise words: “A very rich person should leave his kids enough to do anything but not enough to do nothing.”

Of course, if you do want to leave your children something, you’ll need to know how to avoid paying inheritance tax.

5. You don’t need ‘designer’ goods

Li Ka-shing, Hong Kong’s richest industrialist, is renowned for his no-frills lifestyle. Perhaps thanks to his humble beginning as a teacher’s son in China, Li Ka-shing wears plain black shoes and an inexpensive Seiko watch. Clearly, he can live without the Vacheron Costantin wristwatch and the Berluti shoes.

Ingvar Kamprad is another billionaire who cares little for designer labels. The IKEA founder doesn’t wear suits and explains his frugality thus: “People say I am cheap, and I don't mind if they do.”

Here at lovemoney.com, we recently conducted an experiment to see if we could copy a celebrity look using only clothes we found in a local charity shop. Find out what happened!

6. You need a sense of perspective

Sometimes, vast wealth becomes a crushing burden. Famously, eccentric American billionaire Howard Hughes spent the last years of his life holed up a hotel room, terrified of human contact and germs.

Serena Cowdy shows you how to get loads of free money

However, many billionaires are remarkably well-adjusted and fully understand how fortunate they are. As Larry Ellison remarked, “I certainly never expected to become rich, certainly not this rich. I mean, rich does not even describe this. This is surreal.”

Warren Buffett acknowledges that he ‘won the lottery of life’ by being born in the US and gives this advice: “The trick in life is to do things that are fun all the time.” Also, one of America’s original tycoons, John D Rockefeller warns, “If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it.”

So, in order to enjoy your wealth, you need to keep things in perspective and enjoy life. There is such a thing as caring too much about money, as you can see from these Seven seriously stingy money-saving tips.

7. You need to be generous

In the words of Carlos Slim Helú, “I've always said that the better off you are, the more responsibility you have for helping others.”

Many billionaires and entrepreneurs have similar philanthropic views. As hedge-fund billionaire and international statesman George Soros says: “I'm not doing my philanthropic work, out of any kind of guilt, or any need to create good public relations. I'm doing it because I can afford to do it, and I believe in it.”

For example, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have called on the world’s billionaires to donate trillions of dollars to charity after death. In response to this ‘Giving Pledge Campaign’, 40 US billionaires have promised to give $125 billion to charity. Find out how to maximise your own charitable donations.

It’s not about the cash

In summary, being a billionaire is much more than having dynastic wealth. Most moguls started chasing their dreams, not a fortune. Instead, they place much higher worth on their inner values, their everyday behaviour, their responsibilities, and their savvy spending.

In short, the mega-rich don’t rashly throw their money about, so you should do the same

Are you sad to see Peggy go?

She's ordered just about everyone to get out of her pub at some point over the past 16 years but now it's Peggy's turn to quit the Queen Vic for good.

Yes, Walford's favourite landlady has pulled her final pint.

Peggy bowed out of 'EastEnders' after her beloved pub burned to the ground in a fire started by her crack addict son Phil.

Despite months of speculation that she would perish in the flames, Peggy's exit was less dramatic with the matriarch simply setting off to start life on her own away from her cherished family. And who can blame her?

It's fair to say she hasn't had the best of times in her 16 years on the Square, which have been marred by family strife, punch-ups with Pat, family strife, murder, family strife, cancer and yes, more family strife.

She also found time to marry twice - once to Frank Butcher (who ended up cheating on her with Pat) and then to Archie Mitchell (and look what happened to him!).

Life in Walford will never be the same again.

Take a look at some of our favourite Peggy moments and let us know if you're sad to see her go...
