The former 'Big Breakfast' presenter is said to have come across the 1.5kg stash of white powder which was hidden behind some rocks while hiking across the Peruvian Andes.
Van Outen, who recently completed the five-day charity trek with other celebrities to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, alerted the Peruvian authorities via satellite phone after the shocking discovery. The finding was later recovered and sent for testing. The 36-year-old star told a Daily Mirror journalist who is also accompanying her on the trek: "I spotted it from out of the corner of my eye as I went to find a makeshift toilet - a big, clear plastic bag containing loads of white powder.
"Initially, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing and wasn't too sure quite what to do with it. I had visions of me being framed by police clutching the stuff!
"But I handed it straight over to our security guys who then had to satellite phone through to local police. It was given to them and taken away."
One theory of how the drugs came to be abandoned was that they were dropped by smugglers attempting to cross the border.
Van Outen was joined on the trek by other celebrities including 'X Factor' singer Alexandra Burke, presenter Fearne Cotton and Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi. They completed the arduous Inca Trail, finishing at Machu Picchu, a ruined Inca site regarded as one of the modern wonders of the world.
The two-part documentary will be shown on ITV2 later next month
