John Lewis dept store sales up 8 percent Sunday to Wednesday

The employee-owned group, which also runs upmarket food chain Waitrose, said on Thursday it was benefiting from its ability to sell goods over the internet as well as in stores, with johnlewis.com sales up 52 percent.
"Despite the still fairly adverse weather conditions it is pleasing to see growth on last year with sales up 8 percent -- particularly as we are up against a strong last year comparative," it said.John Lewis, which runs Britain's biggest department store group by sales, said last week the chain's sales rose 1.2 percent, held back by bad weather.
Music, DVD, games and books group HMV warned on Thursday that severe winter weather was affecting Christmas trading.
